Malashock Dance is in its 16th season as one of California's premier modern dance companies and has become an integral part of San Diego's arts community --- providing performances, educational programs, outreach projects and classes to thousands of people each year.
John Malashock, following his extensive career in dance and theater, founded Malashock Dance in 1988. The Company performs in various San Diego venues and events and has toured nationally and internationally. Malashock Dance completed its first international tour to Poland, Romania, and Macedonia during 1997. The Company presented twelve performances in ten cities and was met with standing ovations and multiple curtain calls.
Malashock frequently collaborates on projects with other artists and cultural organizations such as the San Diego Opera, San Diego Symphony, and the La Jolla Chamber Music Society. Malashock has also embarked on a number of media collaborations, working with UCSD-TV to film seven Malashock productions, and KPBS-TV, for which his work Apologies from the Lower Deck received an Emmy Award.
In October, 2003, Malashock released The Soul of Saturday Night, which falls into the new genre of dance film, choreographed specifically for the camera. Produced with partner UCSD-TV, the film has won several awards - including two Emmy Awards; is being shown at film festivals; and has aired on KPBS-TV and UCSD-TV. The second film, Love & Murder, is scheduled to premiere in the end of 2004.
Complementing Malashock's full performance schedule is a set of education programs, including Emotion in Motion, where fifth graders create and perform dance stories based on their own feelings, and Summer in San Diego, an annual three week workshop for professional track dancers.
Malashock also has taken a leadership role in the NTC Foundation project, "Dance Place/San Diego," the building at the historic Naval Training Center that will house studios and performance space for the entire San Diego dance community.
