Puerto Rico has a rich culture whose origins can be traced back to native Taino Indian, Spanish and West African roots. As we teach the traditional music and dances of the Puerto Rico, we also teach the history and cultural significance behind them.
From her roots in Caguas (a city south of San Juan), Dr. Ana Marķa Maynard was raised in a Puerto Rican neighborhood on the outskirts of the island (Bronx, New York). Growing up she always looked forward to weddings, baptisms and birthday parties because it meant family and friends bringing conga drums, bongos, guiros, maracas, and that she could dance to the rhythms of Puerto Rico all night long.
Ana Marķa founded Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance in 1997 and regularly returns to La Isla for research, workshops, and mentorships with generous folklore masters such as Modesto Cepeda at the Escuela de Bomba y Plena de Puerto Rico , Joaquin Nieves Caldero of Guateque Ballet Folklorico de Puerto Rico, J. Emanuel Dufrasne-Gonzalez and Nelie Lebron-Robles of Paracumbe, Eric Gonzalez and Raul de la Paz of Gibaro de Puerto Rico.
